baby names for William AND Kate

Prince William is gearing up to be a father as the Palace has confirmed that Kate Middleton is pregnant!

To help the royal couple out, we have come up with baby boy names and baby girl names that are fit for a future king or queen.

Are you ready for a royal baby name bonanza? Kate Middleton has a royal bun in the oven — and this time the rumors are official, as the Palace confirmed her pregnancy in a statement:

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.“

The already thin Duchess is dealing with acute morning sickness, however, and is in the hospital.

“The Duchess was admitted this afternoon to King Edward VII Hospital in Central London with Hyperemesis Gravidarum,“ the statement from the Palace said. “As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in the hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter.“

As she recuperates, we have some great baby name suggestions for her!

Baby names fit for a King

If the royal baby is a boy, the couple may consider naming their son William— or perhaps Charles, after Prince William’s father.

More than likely, however, the couple will use one of the above names as a middle name and choose a different first name for their royal baby. The royal family often opts for traditional names over trendy names, so the following boy names are all great choices:

The couple has embraced popular culture, so perhaps one of these cool preppy names will catch their eye?

Baby names fit for a Queen

If the Duchess is pregnant with a girl, the most obvious choice is to name her Diana, after Prince William’s mother. Diana would also make a lovely middle name, as well.

Elizabeth is another traditional royal family name that they may decide to pass on as a first or middle name. We also love the following classic baby girl names for a future Queen:

We doubt they will name her after Aunt Pippa, however the following girl names are vintage and chic, yet a bit more modern:

Woman making list of baby names

Tips for picking
a baby name

If you are gearing up to pick the perfect baby name for your child in the upcoming year, it is time to brush up on these baby name resolutions. Whether this is your first child or third, you are expecting twins or are adopting, check out these tips for picking the perfect baby name.

Resolutions aren’t just about losing weight, organizing or getting out of debt. If you are expecting a baby and are searching for the perfect baby name, our baby name resolutions will help you avoid many of the common baby name mistakes many parents fall in to.

Tip: Check out our list of the top 100 baby names and try to steer away from the names at the top of the list if you are looking for a more unique name.

I will think outside the box

Most parents who regret their baby name choice say it is because they picked a name that was too popular. Not sure if your name is in danger of being overused? Pay attention to the names of the babies and kids at the parks or at stores. If you love the name Mason or Olivia, but have heard a couple of kids with that same name you might want to consider a different name — unless you don’t care that your name choice is a popular one.

I will think twice about picking a name with a weird spelling

Even though you may not necessarily want a popular name, there is something to be said for picking a name that is easy to pronounce and spell. If you name your child Ryan, but spell it Rian or decide to name your daughter Emileigh instead of Emily, be prepared for you to have to spell it out and pronounce it to friends, family, teachers... the list goes on.

The bottom line is when it comes to creative baby name spellings, what looks cool on paper doesn’t always translate well into the real world.

I will look to the past for ideas for the future

One baby name trend we love are old-fashioned or vintage baby names. Many of these classic names are easy to spell and pronounce, yet still sound unique and fresh. Some examples include Milo and Jack for boys or Pearl and Delilah for girls.

I will use the middle name as a buffer

If you pick an unusual baby name or one that has a different spelling, consider using the middle name as a buffer by picking a classic name that can be used if your child wants to as he or she grows up.

I will be inspired by celebrity baby names, but won’t copy them

Even though Beyoncé named her daughter Blue or Reese Witherspoon named her son Tennessee it doesn't mean you should too... unless you want people to say things like, “Oh, you named your son Kingston... like Gwen Stefani?”

You can be inspired by celebrity baby names, but think twice about copying them. For example, if you love how Reese picked a destination name, consider naming your son Austin or your daughter Brooklyn. Instead of naming your daughter Blue, you can name her Sage or Rose.

I won’t go with names that sound too much alike when naming twins

Things can get confusing fast if you name your twins names that sound too much alike, such as Hayden and Aidan or Ava and Ada. You can pick names with the same first letter, just make sure there is a clear distinction between the two, such as Madison and Max.

Special considerations when naming children who are adopted

Many parents who are searching for a name for a child they are adopting struggle with deciding if they should keep the birth name or change it. Although every circumstance is different, many parents have decided to incorporate their birth name as a middle name as a happy medium. If the child you are adopting is older, letting him weigh in on this decision is a good idea. Some may want to completely change their name, other children may want to hold on to it.

Icelandic teen named “Girl” battling to change her name

Iceland's strict baby name policies

One Icelandic teen is suing her country because the name her mother gave her, Blaer, isn’t on the country’s list of approved names and is considered "masculine" so they changed her name to Stulka — which translates to “Girl” in English.

Here in the United States where baby names like Moxie Crimefighter and Blue Ivy hardly make us bat an eye, it is hard to imagine not being able to name your child whatever you wish. In Iceland, however, parents must choose from an approved list of 1,853 girl names and 1,712 boy names.

Icelandic mother Bjork Eidsdottir named her daughter Blaer, which means “light breeze,“ only later to find out that name wasn’t on the approved list after her child had been baptized. The country of Iceland has since identified 15-year-old Blaer as Stulka, or “Girl,” on all of her official documents, including her passport.

“I had no idea that the name wasn't on the list, the famous list of names that you can choose from,“ said her mother.

Iceland's baby name rules

Iceland isn’t the only country that has strict baby name rules. Germany and Denmark also require parents to pick from their approved names. Some interesting baby name rules in Iceland require that the name “be adaptable to the structure of the Icelandic language and spelling conventions” and “does not cause the bearer embarrassment.“

In addition, they do not have any unisex baby names and they state that girls cannot be given a boy’s name and vice versa. It sounds like Jessica Simpson’s daughter Maxwell Drew would have been out of luck!

As would Uma Thurman , as “no person can have more than three personal names.” Due to the fact that the letter “C” is not in Iceland’s alphabet, they have also rejected all “C” names, including Carolina and Christa.

The name Blaer deemed "masculine"

In Blaer’s case, NBC news reports that the country didn’t accept it because it “takes a masculine article, despite the fact that it was used for a female character in a novel by Iceland's revered Nobel Prize-winning author Halldor Laxness.”

The 15-year-old teen said she is taking her case to court and is prepared to take it all the way to their Supreme Court if the decision isn’t in her favor on January 25. “So many strange names have been allowed, which makes this even more frustrating because Blaer is a perfectly Icelandic name,“ said the teen's mom. “It seems like a basic human right to be able to name your child what you want, especially if it doesn't harm your child in any way.“

Tell us

Do you understand Iceland’s laws in protecting children from having a unique name that may cause them embarrassment — or do you think parents should be able to name their child whatever they want?

Gender-bending baby names

Still searching for the perfect baby name? If you are looking for a modern and unique baby girl name, perhaps you should consider checking out the hottest new trend — boys’ names for girls!

Today’s parents are thinking outside of the box when searching for baby names, which is evident in the hottest new baby name trend of gender-bending boy names for girls.

Celebrity driven trend

Jessica Simpson jumped on this gender-bending trend when she named her daughter Maxwell Drew. She explained that the name is from her fiance’s middle name and her mother’s maiden name .

Other celebrities give their child a masculine first name paired with a feminine middle name, such as Michelle Branch who named her daughter Owen Isabelle or Rachel Uchitel who named her daughter Wyatt Lilly.

Soleil Moon Frye and her daughter Jagger

Other stars, such as Soleil Moon Frye, went masculine all the way by naming her daughter Jagger Joseph Blue.

“Jagger was a name that we loved from the beginning of the pregnancy. We always wanted to be surprised by the sex and we felt like it was perfect for a boy or a girl,” Frye told People. “Joseph has a meaning that is so very close to our hearts. It was the name of our godfather... Blue, we just loved it.”

“We have always believed in the names within our family having a deeper purpose and for us, Jagger Joseph Blue was certainly one that came from the bottom of our hearts. She is beautiful, happy and healthy, which is what is most important, and the name makes us smile each and every day,” she said.

Baby names inspired by mythology

If you want to give your baby a name that calls to mind wisdom and power, look no further than the names of the gods of mythology. But remember, the gods had complicated lives. They were the reality TV stars of ancient times. Before you choose a mythological name, make sure you’re certain you want to name your child after an infamous trickster or a goddess of lust.

Maybe you’re more into classic fantasy films than epic novels. These fantasy names from beloved entertainment call to mind battles, wizardry and adventure. Tips for choosing a fantasy name

When you’re choosing a fantasy name for your child, make sure people will know how to pronounce it. Try not to choose a name that’s spelled so obtusely that your child will spend the rest of his or her life patiently explaining how it’s spelled. Try pairing an unusual fantasy name with a classic middle name, or pair a popular first name with a fantasy middle name. In the end, be prepared for a kid who grows up preppy and uses a nickname so no one will know his parents were huge nerds.
